There is a virtual world parallel with ours : Lyoko.
Designed as a virtual paradise, Lyoko is seriously threated. A computer named XANA controlling this world had a bug.
XANA took his independence. This supercomputer plans yet to take the control of the Earth. Its strategy : destruction.
Alone on Lyoko, Aelita, a virtual humanoid being is opposed to XANA.
On Earth, a band of four teenagers knows about the existence of Lyoko and the harmful intentions of X.A.N.A. They are YUMI, ULRICH, ODD and JEREMIE.
They lead a double life in a deep secret : they are schoolboys as the others for schooltime, world savers the rest of the time. If they warn the authorities
about the danger menacing the world, Lyoko would be undoubtibly and immediately destroyed and Aelita would disapear. For our heroes, it's out of question : between Aelita and our gang of heroes, a great friendship exists.
There is only one way to fight XANA : Go and fight it on its own battle field ; be transfered on Lyoko. Yumi, Ulrich, Odd and Jérémie found the way to go into Lyoko, and they hope to save both worlds.
It's not a game, the worlds are in danger.

Synopsis 2005
A megalomaniac digital entity, named XANA, bent on world domination, has taken over the supercomputer in charge of Lyoko. It attacks the real world by activating towers (usually one at a time), which act as links to the real world. If the group is able to get Aelita to the activated tower(s) out of the more than forty scattered about Lyoko's five regions, she can deactivate the tower and neutralize XANA's attack on the real world; then the supercomputer can revert time to just before the attack, leaving no one except Team Lyoko to remember any of the events that transpired. To complicate the situation, they must do this while ensuring their classmates and teachers are not killed (because going back in time cannot bring back those killed by XANA), and deal with the various personality clashes they have with them at the same time.
Despite the occasional use of English names for characters in the American dub, Code: LYOKO is set in France, presumably in Boulogne-Billancourt where the real factory that the factory in the show is based on was located. The school is also shown to be located in France, as observed through the targeting computer of a military satellite that XANA had taken over in the episode "Satellite". Several dubbing errors confuse the location, such as Americanized street names in one episode. The second season seems to confuse this more so than the first, as there have been several dubbing errors that directly confuse the location.

Synopsis of the DVD
Code Lyoko" tells the story of a group of students who uncover a parallel universe called Lyoko inside a super-computer that is threatened by a renegade program named XANA that could destroy the world. It's up to four boarding school students named Jeremy, Yumi, Ulrich, and Odd to help a humanoid being inside Lyoko named Aelita to stop the rogue program X.A.N.A and his plans to attack their world. Jeremy, who is in love with Aelita, struggles through season 1 to find a way to "materialize" aelita, so she can become human by exiting the scanners that connect Odd, Ulrich, and Yumi to Lyoko. If Jeremy accomplishes this, he will be able to shut down Lyoko and defeat XANA. In the episode "Code: EARTH", we witness Jeremy finally materializes Aelita, and accomplishes his dream. The group deactivate Lyoko, but the didn't guess what would happened. XANA apparently infected Aelita with a virus before she was materialized so that if XANA goes, she does too! After being distraught by this dilemma, Aelita and Jeremy spend time together. After returning Aelita to her temporary home, Yumi's house, Jeremy heads back home. In the beginning of season 2, we witness the dawn of new technology. Jeremy programs vehicles into Lyoko, for faster travel, and he also makes a better scan program to detect "activated towers", so Aelita can live on earth, without having to stay in Lyoko to look out for XANA's attacks on earth! ALong with that, Jeremy announces that he is working on an anti-virus good enough to save Aelita from XANA! Franz Hopper, a brilliant scientist, seems related to Aelita after some research. After discovering the Lyoko gang discovers the truth, we learn that Aelita was created on Lyoko as the guardian of it by Franz Hopper. Lyoko and even XANA were made by him, although XANA became evil by himself. With Jeremy, Odd, Ulrich, Yumi, and Aelita against XANA, we're sure to experience a great adventure!
